How to Build Your Registered Dietitian Network and Build Meaningful Relationships

There are so many benefits to being a Registered Dietitian with an online private practice! From working with your dream clientele to having the freedom to live wherever you want, there is so much joy and fulfillment that comes from a virtual nutrition business. However, an online practice also presents plenty of challenges and questions for you to figure out as an entrepreneur.

Of course, with an online practice, you don’t need to worry about things like location, business hours, and office decor. But, should you worry about building a professional network? Is there value in that as an online nutrition coach? YES! In this post, I’ll break down exactly why networking is important and how you can do that in an online space.

Let’s get into it!

A business network is a group of individuals with an intentional relationship that facilitates communication, collaboration, and the sharing of resources. Usually they’re in the same industry or at least have overlapping clientele that allow them to strategically partner and benefit from everyone in the network. It’s easy to see why that would be important with a physical RD practice, but it’s also super important online!

Why Is Networking Important Even In The Online Space?

Why Is Networking Important Even In The Online Space?

A strong network is essential to help online businesses grow, innovate, and access valuable insights and opportunities via professional connections and resource sharing! Here’s how it can benefit you even as an online nutrition business:

You’ll reach a wider audience.

Networking is actually a great way to grow your practice! When you work with other healthcare professionals in your niche, you can mutually benefit from the exposure to each other’s clients. For example, if you’re a sports dietitian and form a partnership with a local gym, running a workshop at their facility could inspire gym regulars to join nutrition coaching while also encouraging your nutrition clients to grab memberships to this facility!

You’ll learn more about the space you work in.

Running a business keeps you very busy! However, networking with other professionals can help you stay informed about new developments in your niche. You’ll stay up to date with trends, gain diverse perspectives, and further your expansive knowledge.

You’ll better understand your client’s habits and lifestyles.

The better you understand your client, the better you can serve them (and market to them!). By networking with other professionals who work with your target audience in various ways, you gain valuable insights into your clients' habits and lifestyles to reach them in a more meaningful and holistic way.

You’ll find opportunities to expand your business.

No matter your niche, partnering with other health professionals can help you expand your offers and take your business to the next level. You could bundle services, curate collaborative programs, execute joint research, run comprehensive workshops, run mutually beneficial marketing campaigns, and more!

You’ll be able to share knowledge with peers.

When you’re in the business of helping people, the more you know, the more effective you can be. Sharing knowledge with other professionals will allow you all to serve your community in a more holistic way! Plus, if you ever come across a particularly difficult client or circumstance, you can draw on the experience and wisdom of many intelligent and seasoned professionals!

You’ll find support from others in your niche.

Sometimes the hardest part of being an entrepreneur is overcoming burnout, squashing self-limiting beliefs, and just staying positive! With a strong network, you can draw on the support and kindness of others who’ve been through it or are currently going through it with you. It’s an EMPOWERING thing!

How To Build A Professional Network and Build Meaningful Relationships As A Registered Dietitian

How To Build A Professional Network and Build Meaningful Relationships As A Registered Dietitian

To establish an effective and supportive network, you have to be intentional in how you build these relationships. Here are some of my personal tips to develop beneficial and authentic connections with others in your field.

Ensure prior to working together that your values align.

Before you take the time to build relationships, do some research on their business. There are a lot of approaches to health, and the way this professional may run their business may not align with your programming and personal values. It’s important that your strategies and principles are compatible before reaching out.

Do virtual or in-person coffee dates.

Whether in-person or virtual, take time to actually talk with other professionals face-to-face! It allows you to more naturally develop relationships that actually grow into something constructive and substantial.

Take genuine interest in their business.

To build rapport, make sure you’re not just talking about yourself, your business, and why a partnership would be beneficial for you. Take genuine interest in their business by doing plenty of research, asking lots of questions, and supporting their success in any way possible.

Ensure the relationship is mutually beneficial.

When you decide to establish a partnership, consider how you can make the relationship beneficial for both of you. This will foster a long-term connection that has value beyond one campaign or joint effort!

Celebrate each other’s achievements.

Not everything about your relationship needs to be about the success of your joint campaigns. Make it a point to celebrate their business achievements to show that you genuinely support their entrepreneurial success!

Regularly follow-up.

Reach out to individuals in your network on a regular basis. Don’t wait for a new partnership idea to come along to talk with them again this will probably result in the relationship fizzling out pretty quickly. Set up a routine that connects you regularly with your network!

Attend events together.

There are lots of opportunities physically and virtually to expand your knowledge, engage in professional development, grow your practice, or help your community. Attending conferences and other events with entrepreneurs in your professional network will allow you to build stronger connections, engage in brainstorming sessions, make a bigger impact on your clients, and curate new plans to collaborate!
