How to Analyze and Interpret Data to Scale Your Online Business as an RD

Managing an online nutrition business may be less upkeep than a brick-and-mortar practice, but it’s still not an easy task! There are so many challenges of an online business from handling stiff competition, retaining your clients, and finding a marketing strategy that works. In order to conquer all the inevitable hurdles, you must learn how to effectively analyze and interpret data.

A thriving online private nutrition practice doesn’t happen through trial and error. Instead, you need to deeply understand what’s working in your business, and what’s not. You can gain that awareness through collecting and sorting through data! All aspects of your business can be broken down into numbers that should inform your next steps as an entrepreneur. 

But, where do you even begin, right? Data analytics was probably not something you tackled in nutrition school or in your traditional RD job. To help you get started, I am sharing a guide for analyzing and interpreting data to scale your online nutrition business.

Step 1: Define your goals.

The first thing you need to do before diving into data analytics is define your goals. There are going to be lots of metrics available to you, but you’ll get overwhelmed if you don’t decide what problems you’d like to solve first! So, consider your current business goals and focus your attention there to start. 

Step 2: Set up the appropriate software. 

You don’t need to track data on pen and paper and make your own graphs. No business owner has time for that! Instead, use software that can collect, display, and organize data for you. There are lots of different options out there to track different parts of your business, which I’ll get into nearer to the end of this guide. 

Step 3: Collect data on the key areas of your business. 

Now, it’s time for data collection. There is a lot you can work with here! You don’t just need to be tracking what money is coming in and what’s going out there are dozens of useful data sets that’ll help inform your next business moves. Here’s what I recommend you track:

Client Adherence:

Understanding how well clients are following your system can help you see what’s working well and what needs attention as far as your program goes. Track things like dietary patterns, eating habits, health outcomes, and other insights related to your niche! 

Client Retention: 

You need to know how long your clients usually stick with you to plan financially for fluctuations in session books and to make intentional improvements to increase your client retention metrics.  

NPS Scores and Client Satisfaction: 

NPS stands for “Net Promoter Score” and it’s a widely used metric in business that shows how happy clients are and how likely they are to recommend your services. 

Revenue and Expenses: 

Of course, you need to track your finances well. This above all else will protect your business from failure. Budgeting is everything! 

Marketing Effectiveness and Lead Conversion:

It’s good to have a mix of marketing techniques to diversify and generate good ROI. However, to know if your plan is working, you need to know the data behind your lead conversion.  

Service Efficiency: 

Looking at patterns in appointment scheduling, client communication, and other aspects of your service can help you optimize your business to better engage clients. 

Website Analytics: 

If you have a website, you need to know things like your bounce rate, engagement metrics, page views, traffic sources, etc. This will tell you how people are finding your practice and how interested they are once they see your website. 

Blog and Resource Engagement: 

Search engine optimized blog posts and other free resources on your website are useful tools to boost online visibility and generate organic traffic. Your website insights should show you how successful this content is through plenty of measurable data.  

Social Media Metrics: 

Social media channels include lots of analytics and insights from their app or desktop site without needing any additional software. If you use social channels to market your nutrition business, definitely utilize these tools.

Email Campaign Success: 

Email newsletters or email drip campaigns can be useful tools for your business, but you won’t know how useful they are without tracking the data. So, keep track of those numbers from your email marketing software. 

Step 4: Clean and organize your data. 

Once you have all the numbers, you need to “clean” your data, which means fixing any inaccurate, incomplete, or irrelevant data that may have been collected. Then, organize it in a way that allows you to fully process it all and analyze your goals.

Step 5: Analyze your data to identify patterns, trends, and relationships. 

Scrutinize the data that you’ve organized to find patterns, trends, and relationships that give you the details you need on your business’s performance. This data analysis should basically give you a report card of how your practice is doing in all categories! 

Step 6: Translate the data into actionable insights. 

You’ll have multiple data sets for each area of business growth. Take that raw data and pull meaningful information out of those numbers to drive your future actions and goals as an entrepreneur. 

Step 7: Make data-driven changes to improve your business. 

At this point, the changes you need to make are probably obvious! Take the real world, data-backed information you have about your practice and make intentional changes to improve your business. 

Step 8: Monitor and adjust based on performance. 

Continue to analyze data after you implement changes to ensure everything went as planned! These are called launch debriefs. If you perform them regularly each time you make a big change to your practice, you’re setting yourself up for huge success!

It illustrates this data with intuitive dashboards and reports, making it easy to monitor client outcomes and identify trends.

NutriAdmin is also a great software choice for RDs, as it can help with everything from nutrition analytics to meal planning. It’s a great choice for personalized data collection on things like food logs, submitted dietary restrictions, reported dietary habits, and more. The application showcases all the info in easy-to-understand visuals on custom dashboards. 

Qualaroo

Remember those NPS scores? You need a way to collect and track those! Qualaroo takes care of collecting the data from clients, organizing the information, and reporting it back to you via actionable insights. You can set up all your client surveys and prompts to follow a pre-generated plan, so you don’t even have to think about it! The reviews come in and the data is ready for you next time you sign in! 

QuickBooks Online

Let me start by saying I highly recommend you hire a CPA or other financial expert (like Megan Naaz) to help you with the financial side of things.
